Plumbing emergencies can happen at any time and often when you least expect them. Whether it’s a burst pipe, an overflowing toilet, or a sudden water leak, knowing what to do in those first few minutes can prevent costly damage and protect your home.
In Central and South Texas, extreme weather, aging pipes, and hard water conditions can all contribute to plumbing issues. Acting quickly and correctly makes all the difference.

What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

Not every plumbing issue requires immediate attention, but some situations should never wait.
Common plumbing emergencies include:
  • Burst pipes
  • Major water leaks
  • Sewer backups
  • Overflowing toilets
  • No water in the home
  • Water heater failure causing flooding
If the issue is causing active water damage, disrupting your daily life, or creating a safety hazard, it is considered an emergency.

Step-by-Step: What to Do in a Plumbing Emergency

When a plumbing emergency happens, it is easy to panic. Follow these steps to stay in control and minimize damage.
1. Shut Off the Water ImmediatelyLocate your main water shut-off valve and turn it off. This is the most important step to stop water flow and prevent further damage.
  • Typically located outside near the foundation or in a utility area
  • Turn the valve clockwise to shut it off
2. Turn Off the Water HeaterIf you suspect a major leak or burst pipe, turn off your water heater to prevent pressure buildup and damage.
  • For gas heaters, turn the gas supply off
  • For electric heaters, switch off the breaker
3. Address Electrical RisksIf water is near electrical outlets or appliances, turn off power to the affected area at your breaker box.
Safety always comes first.
4. Contain the WaterUse towels, buckets, or mops to contain and absorb water. This helps prevent damage to flooring, walls, and furniture.
5. Check for the SourceIf it is safe, try to identify where the problem is coming from. This can help when explaining the issue to a plumber.
6. Call a Professional PlumberOnce the immediate situation is under control, contact a licensed plumber to assess and repair the issue properly.
